The Nikkei 225 index rose 1.08% to reach 63,954 at Wednesday’s close (October 28), marking its second consecutive session of gains. This upward movement followed a positive performance on Wall Street, where recent developments have reignited investor optimism regarding the artificial intelligence (AI) sector.
AI-related sentiment was bolstered after Broadcom announced a US$63 billion funding deal involving the use of its technology by Anthropic. Meanwhile, Oracle expanded its partnership with OpenAI, and a US$25 billion share offering by Meta saw demand exceed supply by five times.
In Asia, strong performance in the semiconductor sector further supported market sentiment. SK Hynix reported a significant increase in revenue and operating profit, driven by robust AI-related demand—a development that has strengthened optimism for the chip industry's outlook.
Japanese technology and AI-related stocks served as the primary catalysts for the gains. Kioxia surged 13.8%, Taiyo Yuden climbed 7.1%, Ibiden rose 7.9%, SoftBank Group added 4.7%, and Advantest gained 3.2%.
Investors are also closely monitoring a series of central bank decisions this week. While the Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank (ECB), and the Bank of Japan are expected to keep interest rates unchanged, the market remains alert to potential policy shifts or signals regarding possible rate hikes in December.
Newsmaker Analysis: The Nikkei’s strength indicates that optimism surrounding AI has once again become a primary catalyst for the Japanese market. However, the rally remains contingent upon the performance of technology companies, demand for chips, and the direction of central bank policies. Should expectations for AI growth remain strong, technology and semiconductor stocks could potentially sustain their momentum. (srh)
