The USD/CHF pair weakened, trading around 0.8220 during Monday’s European session (November 2), following a slight gain in the previous session. The Swiss Franc drew support from domestic economic data that outperformed expectations, particularly in the manufacturing index and retail sales.
The Swiss SVME Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) rose to 56.7 in October, surpassing the 55.3 forecast. Meanwhile, Swiss real retail sales grew by 1.6% year-on-year in September—a slowdown from the 3.9% growth recorded the previous month and below the 3% expectation.
Downward pressure on USD/CHF also stemmed from a weaker US Dollar, as demand for safe-haven assets waned. Diplomatic efforts to end the conflict in the Middle East have slightly eased market concerns, though the risk of renewed US military action against Iran remains a point of focus.
Qatari and Iranian officials have held talks for three consecutive days, seeking an agreement to end the conflict ahead of the US midterm elections. Such developments could reduce demand for the US Dollar as a safe-haven asset as geopolitical risks begin to subside.
Nevertheless, the Dollar’s decline may be limited, as the market still assigns a roughly 75% probability to a Federal Reserve interest rate hike in December. US economic data—showing sustained growth and persistent inflation—remain the primary drivers behind the market’s continued expectation for monetary tightening.
Investors are now turning their attention to key US data releases this week, most notably the Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP), as well as the ISM Manufacturing and ISM Services indices. Comments from various Federal Reserve officials will also be closely monitored for clues regarding the future direction of monetary policy.
Ultimately, the movement of the USD/CHF pair will depend heavily on the interplay between the strength of the Swiss economy, the trajectory of the US Dollar, and expectations surrounding Federal Reserve interest rates. This week’s NFP data has the potential to serve as a key catalyst, determining whether the pressure on USD/CHF will persist or if the dollar will regain momentum. (arl)
