The Nikkei 225 index rose 1.73% to reach 63,268 by the close of trading on Tuesday (October 27), snapping a three-session losing streak. The rally followed a rebound on Wall Street and a resurgence of optimism surrounding the artificial intelligence (AI) sector, spurred by news of Anthropic’s planned IPO.
Positive sentiment toward AI bolstered Japanese technology and semiconductor stocks. Advantest surged 9.6%, Ibiden climbed 9.1%, SoftBank Group gained 5.2%, Lasertec rose 5.1%, and Tokyo Electron added 2.6%.
Investors are also awaiting earnings reports from major semiconductor firms—including Samsung and SK Hynix—as well as U.S. tech giants such as Amazon, Alphabet, and Microsoft. The performance of these companies will serve as a key indicator of the strength of demand and the outlook for AI-related investments.
On the macroeconomic front, the market is bracing for decisions from several central banks this week. The Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank (ECB), and the Bank of Japan are widely expected to keep interest rates unchanged; consequently, investors will be closely monitoring policy statements and forward guidance to gauge the market's next direction.
Newsmaker Analysis: The Nikkei’s rebound suggests that investor interest in AI stocks has strengthened again following recent pressure. However, the sustainability of this rally will depend on the earnings results of technology companies and the outlook for chip demand. Should the AI sector continue to perform strongly, semiconductor stocks could maintain their momentum and provide ongoing support for the Nikkei. (srh)
