Wall Street saw mixed movement on Wednesday (October 28) after an initial gain, as investors refrained from major moves ahead of the Federal Reserve's interest rate decision. In midday trading, the S&P 500 rose 0.2%, the Dow Jones climbed 0.2%, while the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.1%.
Sentiment in the technology sector continues to be bolstered by a resurgence in artificial intelligence (AI)-related trading. Strong performance from memory chipmaker SK Hynix served as the latest catalyst, though concerns regarding debt-funded AI investments continue to loom over the market.
Investor attention is primarily focused on the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), which is expected to hold interest rates steady following a hike in September. This comes despite recent U.S. consumer and producer inflation data coming in higher than anticipated, while a rise in Treasury yields since the September meeting has further increased borrowing costs.
The market also anticipates that the Fed may keep the door open for a potential rate hike in December. The proximity of the U.S. midterm elections on November 3 is another factor contributing to the expectation that the central bank will opt to keep rates unchanged at this meeting.
However, market attention is likely focused even more on the press conference held by Fed Chair Kevin Warsh. Investors will be looking for clues as to whether Warsh might begin signaling the possibility of future rate hikes—a notable point, given his past reluctance to provide forward guidance.
Following the Fed's decision, investors will turn their attention to U.S. economic data scheduled for release on Thursday—specifically third-quarter GDP and the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index, a key inflation gauge closely monitored by the central bank. Both datasets could provide a clearer picture of the future direction of monetary policy.
