European stock markets edged lower on Friday (October 30), with the STOXX 600 index falling 0.25% to 647.49. The pressure stemmed primarily from the technology sector, which is once again clouded by concerns regarding the scale of investments in artificial intelligence (AI) and whether companies can generate commensurate returns. Despite this, the index remains on track to post both weekly and monthly gains.
The technology sector served as the primary drag, declining by approximately 2% after earnings reports from Amazon and Intel reignited concerns about the sustainability of AI-related spending. Investors are beginning to question whether the massive outlays on AI infrastructure will be sufficient to drive long-term profit growth.
Market sentiment was further weighed down by political uncertainty in France, compounded by cost-of-living pressures and high levels of government debt—factors that have limited the gains in European markets throughout the month.
Nevertheless, strong performances from several major companies provided some support to the market. Earnings reports from ASML, Shell, and Airbus bolstered confidence in the health of European corporations. Shares of BP also rose after the company reported third-quarter net profits that exceeded expectations, while Puma surged following a solid quarterly performance.
Meanwhile, shares of Bayer climbed after the company won a legal case involving claims from three women who alleged that its herbicide product, Roundup, caused cancer. Investors are now awaiting third-quarter GDP data for the Eurozone, which is expected to provide further insight into the region's economic condition and help determine the future direction of European stock trading.
