European stocks saw limited movement on Wednesday (October 28), with the Euro Stoxx 50 and Stoxx 600 indices remaining relatively flat. Gains in Germany and Italy helped offset downward pressure in Spain, where the market fell by more than 1% following a train accident that claimed 68 lives.
Markets in the UK and France also showed little change. Investors remained cautious as rising tensions in the Middle East reignited concerns over potential disruptions to energy supplies.
The oil and gas sector emerged as a key gainer, rising by over 1%. The automotive and parts sector also climbed more than 1%, while the utilities sector posted gains of over 0.5%.
Conversely, media stocks fell by nearly 2%, followed by the mining, household goods, and chemicals sectors. These movements reflect a divided market sentiment, shaped by a mix of economic and geopolitical catalysts.
Among individual stocks, Logitech shares plunged 10% due to concerns regarding its supply chain. GSK fell 5% after its performance results disappointed investors, while Santander dropped 5.5% following a decline in net profit.
On the other hand, Standard Chartered rose 2.7%, and Deutsche Bank surged 4%, both bolstered by stronger-than-expected performance or outlooks. Meanwhile, UBS shares fell 1%, and Mercedes-Benz rose 0.4%, despite the latter cutting its outlook.
