The Hang Seng Index edged lower on Wednesday (Sept. 2), settling at 25,311.21 in Hong Kong trading. Index movement remained relatively contained as pressure on several large-cap stocks was offset by gains in others.
BYD exerted the greatest downward pressure on the index, sliding 3.4%. The decline of the electric vehicle manufacturer weighed on sentiment regarding the automotive and industrial sectors.
Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) recorded the steepest percentage drop, plunging 4.7%. The trade and industry sectors led the market's decline.
Of the 93 Hang Seng constituent stocks, 47 closed lower while 43 rose. This composition indicates that selling pressure has not yet spread evenly across the entire market.
According to Newsmaker's analysis, the Hang Seng is likely to consolidate as long as pressure on BYD, CATL, and industrial stocks persists. Broader gains in other sectors are needed to prevent the index from undergoing a deeper correction.
