The Hong Kong stock market faced intense selling pressure during Thursday’s trading session (October 22, 2026), with the Hang Seng Index plummeting 3.2%—or approximately 750 points—to reach the 22,900 level. This decline puts the Hong Kong market on track for its steepest daily drop in seven months. The sell-off was broad-based, hitting various sectors—particularly large-cap technology stocks—as investor concerns grew regarding China’s economic conditions and global market uncertainty.
The heaviest pressure came from major tech stocks: Tencent fell 3.4%, while Alibaba slid 6%. Even sharper declines were seen in Lenovo, which plunged 11.9%, followed by Wuxi Biologics (-8.7%), SMIC (-6.2%), and Xiaomi (-3.9%). This weakness reflects waning investor appetite for Chinese technology and internet stocks, while downward pressure in mainland Chinese markets further dampened sentiment in Hong Kong.
Globally, escalating geopolitical tensions in the Persian Gulf region have added to the strain on stock markets. Brent crude oil prices, which have climbed above US$110 per barrel, have fueled concerns over rising inflation and increased corporate operating costs. Meanwhile, China’s third-quarter economic growth—which came in stronger than anticipated—has tempered investor expectations for further government stimulus in the near term, even as domestic consumption remains weak.
Looking ahead, investors will be closely monitoring Hong Kong’s September inflation figures and unemployment data for the July–September period to gain a clearer picture of the domestic economic landscape. Furthermore, developments in oil prices, China’s economic policies, and interest rate expectations in the United States will remain critical factors. Should the pressure on tech stocks persist and geopolitical risks continue to mount, the Hang Seng Index could face further declines. However, the emergence of positive sentiment stemming from Chinese government policies or an improvement in global conditions could open up opportunities for a recovery.
