The Hong Kong stock market weakened again during Tuesday’s trading session (October 20, 2026), following a holiday on Monday. The Hang Seng Index fell by approximately 1%, or 223 points, to reach the 23,960 level, with the heaviest pressure coming from the technology and retail sectors. This decline reflects growing investor concerns regarding the high costs of artificial intelligence (AI) investments, as well as uncertainty surrounding the direction of China’s economic policy.
Technology stocks were among the primary drivers of the decline, as investors began to question whether massive investments in AI infrastructure would yield the expected returns. High borrowing costs have further pressured technology firms. Shares of Lenovo plunged 5.8%, Tencent weakened by 2%, while MiniMax fell 1.4% and Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) lost 1.5%. Shares of the biotechnology company Innovent Biologics also slid by 4.4%.
Market sentiment was further dampened after China’s central bank, the People's Bank of China (PBOC), decided to keep its benchmark lending rates unchanged. The one-year Loan Prime Rate (LPR) remained at 3.00%, while the five-year rate was held at 3.50%. This decision failed to provide the additional monetary stimulus that some investors had hoped for. However, China’s third-quarter economic growth—which came in better than anticipated—reduced the urgent need for the government to introduce new stimulus measures.
Weakness was also observed across several key sectors on the Hong Kong exchange. Retail trade stocks fell by 2.01%, while the manufacturing sector declined by 1.38%. Conversely, the energy minerals sector saw a slight gain of 0.16%, and the electronic technology sector rose by 0.34%. Although some sectors recorded gains, this strengthening was not enough to offset the selling pressure on technology and consumer stocks.
Looking ahead, the movement of the Hang Seng is expected to remain influenced by China’s economic outlook, the People’s Bank of China’s (PBOC) interest rate policies, and developments in AI technology investments. If concerns regarding the costs of AI development continue to mount, technology stocks could face further downward pressure. Conversely, should companies demonstrate profit growth commensurate with their investments—supported by favorable economic policies from China—the possibility of a market recovery remains. Investors are now waiting to see whether the Hang Seng can hold its ground around the 24,000 level or if it will slide into a deeper decline.
