Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index closed 0.9% lower—down 216 points—at 23,652 in Wednesday’s trading session (October 21, 2026), marking its lowest level since July 2026, or the weakest point in 15 weeks. This decline was driven by a sell-off in technology and battery-manufacturing stocks, which outweighed positive sentiment from global markets. Shares of CATL plunged by approximately 10% following a slowdown in third-quarter profit growth, attributed to intense competition and weakening automobile sales in China.
Technology stocks also faced pressure as investors expressed concerns regarding the returns on massive investments in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector, compounded by high financing costs. Tencent shares fell 3.8%, Pop Mart dropped 5.7%, and Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) declined 2.3%. Conversely, Lenovo rose 2.9% and Z.AI Co. climbed 2%, providing some support to the index. Investors are now closely monitoring China’s economic outlook, potential government stimulus, corporate earnings reports, and the trajectory of U.S. interest rates—all of which could influence the future direction of the Hong Kong stock market.
