The British pound weakened again against the US dollar on Monday (Oct 5); at the time of writing, GBP/USD was trading around 1.3235, following gains in the previous session. The pair remains under pressure amidst a strengthening dollar ahead of the US ISM Services PMI release. Investors are seeking fresh clues regarding US economic strength after the September Nonfarm Payrolls report revealed a much sharper-than-expected slowdown in the labor market.
The NFP data, showing a gain of only 29,000 jobs, dampened expectations for a Federal Reserve rate hike in October. Markets now estimate a 77.9% probability that the Fed will hold interest rates steady. The US unemployment rate also rose to 4.2%, signaling a loss of momentum in the labor market. However, this weakness has not yet diminished the dollar's appeal, as investors remain focused on high Treasury yields.
On the UK front, market attention is focused on rising inflationary pressures driven by energy prices. Several Bank of England officials, including Governor Andrew Bailey, have begun signaling openness to interest rate hikes to bring inflation back under control. Markets currently anticipate potential BoE policy tightening through the end of the year and continuing into 2027.
This situation creates a tug-of-war for GBP/USD. On one hand, the reduced likelihood of a Fed rate hike could alleviate pressure on the dollar. On the other, hawkish signals from the BoE could support the pound. The pair's future direction will depend heavily on US economic data—particularly the ISM Services PMI—as well as developments regarding UK inflation and monetary policy.
GBP/USD remains subject to uncertainty as both central banks grapple with inflationary pressures, despite differing economic conditions and sources of inflation. Should US data show further weakness, the dollar could lose momentum, potentially paving the way for a rebound in the pound. Conversely, strong US data could once again strengthen the USD and maintain pressure on GBP/USD.
