The Australian dollar strengthened, approaching the US$0.70 level during trading on Monday (October 19, 2026), following a recent dip to a multi-month low. This rebound occurred after a senior official at the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), Christopher Kent, questioned whether current interest rates are sufficiently high to curb inflation. His remarks have prompted the market to reconsider the possibility of further interest rate hikes in Australia.
Although the RBA has raised interest rates four times this year—bringing them to 4.6%—Kent suggested that this policy might not be enough to suppress demand and rising prices. This is because the "neutral" interest rate—the level at which policy neither stimulates nor slows down the economy—appears to be rising. If this is the case, a 4.6% interest rate may not exert as much downward pressure on Australian economic activity as previously anticipated.
Meanwhile, Australia’s labor market is showing signs of weakness; the unemployment rate rose to 4.7% in September, its highest level in five years. Nevertheless, Kent cautioned against drawing hasty conclusions based on a single month’s employment data. This leaves the RBA in a challenging position: it must keep inflation under control without placing excessive strain on employment and economic growth.
Separately, the Australian dollar’s strength has been bolstered by a cooling of expectations regarding interest rate hikes in the United States. During an IMF meeting, Federal Reserve (Fed) Chair Kevin Warsh stated that he did not wish to preempt official policy decisions ahead of the Fed’s formal meetings. His comments offered no indication of an imminent rate hike, which helped ease the pressure exerted by the US dollar on other currencies, including the Australian dollar.
Looking ahead, the trajectory of the AUD/USD pair will largely depend on the divergence in interest rate policies between the RBA and the Federal Reserve. If the RBA once again signals the possibility of an interest rate hike while the Federal Reserve opts to keep rates unchanged, the Australian dollar could potentially continue to strengthen and test the US$0.70 level. Conversely, should the Australian labor market weaken further or the US dollar regain strength, the AUD/USD pair risks coming under pressure. Investors will now be closely monitoring Australia’s inflation and labor market data, as well as the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decision on October 27–28, as these will determine the next market direction.
