The Australian Dollar (AUD) is trading below US$0.70, hovering near multi-month lows. Pressure on the AUD mounted after investors scrutinized the minutes from the Reserve Bank of Australia’s (RBA) September meeting, which revealed that several previously anticipated inflation risks are now materializing.
In the minutes, the RBA reaffirmed that interest rate hikes remain a possibility if inflationary pressures persist. This has prompted the market to reassess the likelihood of a rate hike at the November meeting, particularly if third-quarter inflation data reveals sustained high price pressures.
The RBA also highlighted rising global costs, tensions in the Middle East, and oil prices exceeding the assumptions made in its August projections as risks to Australian inflation. Rising energy prices could drive up transportation and production costs, potentially making it more difficult for inflation to return to the target level.
Externally, the AUD is also facing pressure from a strengthening US Dollar, which has climbed to an 18-month high. The Dollar's strength makes the AUD relatively less attractive, especially as investors seek safe-haven assets amidst escalating geopolitical tensions. Consequently, even though the RBA has kept the possibility of rate hikes on the table, the strength of the US Dollar acts as a headwind for the AUD.
Newsmaker notes that the AUD's future trajectory will hinge largely on Australian economic data. The September labor market report, due Thursday, and the third-quarter CPI data, expected at the end of the month, will be pivotal. If inflation and the labor market continue to show strong pressure, the likelihood of an RBA rate hike could rise, providing a boost to the AUD. Conversely, weak data could intensify pressure on the Australian currency.
