Silver prices faced sharp downward pressure during Friday’s trading session (October 30), falling by more than 5% to breach the US$50 per troy ounce level—its lowest point since November 2025. Silver is also on track for a monthly decline of approximately 18% for October, marking its steepest monthly drop since June.
The pressure on silver comes amid a broader sell-off affecting other precious metals; gold prices have also slipped back below US$4,000. This trend reflects mounting strain on precious metal assets, as the conflict in the Middle East drives up oil prices and fuels concerns over inflation.
Expectations of a Federal Reserve interest rate hike in December are a primary factor weighing on silver. While the Fed held rates steady in the 3.75%–4% range during its meeting on Wednesday, the market continues to anticipate the possibility of further tightening. Higher interest rates make assets like silver less attractive, as they do not generate interest income.
Pressure has been further compounded by a sell-off in technology stocks, triggered by concerns regarding the scale of investments in artificial intelligence (AI), which has rattled financial markets. Investors facing losses elsewhere may be liquidating their holdings in precious metals to raise cash, while a strengthening US dollar adds further downward pressure on silver prices.
Newsmaker Analysis: Silver is currently contending with a combination of high-interest-rate expectations, a stronger dollar, and a sell-off in riskier asset classes. With prices now well below their record highs, the market will be watching closely to see whether the US$50 level can serve as a foundation for recovery, or if it will instead become a new threshold that triggers further selling.
