The US labor market delivered a major surprise in August 2026. The US economy added 162,000 jobs, far exceeding market forecasts of just 56,000. This figure also represents a sharp increase compared to July's job growth, which was revised upward to 23,000.
Job gains were primarily driven by the food and beverage services sector and local government education. Conversely, the information sector recorded job losses. This composition indicates that job creation remains robust in certain service sectors, even if it is not yet uniform across the entire economy.
The stronger-than-expected NFP data could reshape market expectations regarding Federal Reserve policy. Prior to the release, markets had begun scaling back bets on a September rate hike after Fed Governor Christopher Waller signaled a dovish stance. However, the surge in job creation could provide the Fed with fresh grounds to maintain a tight policy stance if inflationary pressures have not sufficiently eased.
For financial markets, the report is theoretically positive for the US Dollar and Treasury yields, as the likelihood of interest rates remaining high—or even rising further—could increase. Conversely, gold may face pressure; a stronger Dollar and rising yields could diminish the appeal of the non-yielding precious metal.
Nevertheless, the market is looking beyond the headline NFP figure. Investors will also closely monitor the unemployment rate, wage growth, and upcoming US CPI and PPI inflation data. If these indicators also signal strong pressure, expectations for a more hawkish Fed policy could intensify, potentially triggering significant volatility across the US Dollar, gold, bonds, and stock indices.
