Market Update

European stock markets closed lower on Friday (October 23), with both the STOXX 50 and STOXX 600 indices falling by nearly 0.1%. Investors weighed the impact of rising oil prices—driven by escalating tensions in the Middle East—against a backdrop of corporate earnings releases.
Market sentiment was further dampened by preliminary PMI data, which showed an unexpected contraction in France’s private sector activity. This development underscores the ongoing economic challenges facing the Eurozone, particularly as the pressure from energy costs threatens to intensify.
On the corporate front, shares of SAAB rose 1.5% after the defense firm reported earnings and revenue that beat expectations, bolstered by a deal to supply Gripen fighter jets to Ukraine.
Conversely, Volvo Cars shares plummeted nearly 25% following a sharp decline in sales in China. This downturn exerted significant pressure on the European automotive sector, reflecting broader demand challenges in one of the world’s largest vehicle markets.
For the week, European markets remained under considerable pressure. The EURO STOXX 50 fell by approximately 1.9%, while the STOXX Europe 600 declined by about 1%. Rising energy costs and geopolitical uncertainty were key factors dampening investor appetite for risk assets in the region. (srh)
