USD/JPY

The Japanese yen remained stable, trading around 157.7 against the US dollar on Thursday (October 29), following some pressure earlier in the week. Investors are adopting a cautious stance ahead of the Bank of Japan’s (BOJ) policy decision, while demand for safe-haven assets has provided some support for the Japanese currency.
The BOJ is widely expected to keep interest rates unchanged at this meeting. However, market attention is focused on whether the central bank might signal a potential rate hike in December, particularly as inflationary pressures in Japan persist.
Leading up to the BOJ’s decision, investors are also awaiting a series of Japanese economic data, including the unemployment rate, industrial production, retail sales, and Tokyo inflation figures. Strong data—especially regarding inflation—could reinforce expectations that the normalization of Japan’s monetary policy will continue.
In the United States, the Federal Reserve maintained interest rates in line with market expectations. Notably, two Fed officials favored a 25-basis-point hike, keeping the prospect of further tightening in December on the table and limiting the yen’s potential to strengthen against the US dollar.
Meanwhile, the yen has found renewed support as a safe-haven asset following earnings reports from Alphabet and Samsung, which have sparked fresh concerns regarding the sustainability of investments in artificial intelligence. The future trajectory of the USD/JPY pair will largely depend on the signals provided by the BOJ’s policy decision and shifts in expectations regarding US interest rates toward the end of the year.
