US Dollar

The US dollar weakened, alongside short-term Treasury yields, after the Federal Reserve kept interest rates unchanged—a move in line with market expectations. The Bloomberg Dollar Index fell by approximately 0.1% following the decision, with the decline becoming more pronounced after Fed official Kevin Warsh announced a change to the policy meeting schedule for 2027.
Warsh stated that of the eight Fed meetings scheduled for 2027, only seven will include votes on interest rates. The remaining meeting will be dedicated to broader discussions on monetary policy strategy.
This adjustment is seen as potentially limiting the opportunities for Fed officials to raise interest rates should inflationary pressures resurface. Currently, the market still anticipates nearly three quarter-point rate hikes between now and September 2027.
Some market participants suggest that a reduction in the frequency of rate-setting votes could constrain the Fed’s policy guidance. Such a shift might also diminish the central bank’s ability to respond swiftly to changes in inflation.
Previously, the dollar had been bolstered by expectations that the Fed would continue to raise interest rates to rein in high inflation. However, following the latest decision, two-year Treasury yields dropped by about 3 basis points, putting further downward pressure on the dollar.
For 2028, the Fed also plans to designate two of its eight scheduled meetings for policy strategy discussions, excluding any interest rate decisions. This change signals a new approach to how the central bank communicates its policy.
Newsmaker Analysis: The weakening of the dollar suggests that the market interprets this schedule change as a sign that the Fed’s scope for further tightening has become more restricted. Nevertheless, expectations for rate hikes persist as long as inflation remains elevated. The market’s focus will now shift toward incoming economic data and communications from Fed officials to determine whether the dollar can regain its momentum.
