The US labor market showed further signs of cooling after the latest ADP Weekly Employment Change indicated an average increase of around 16,750 private-sector jobs per week over the four weeks ending October 10, 2026. The figure was lower than the previous period, which was revised to around 17,500 jobs.
The decline suggests that private-sector hiring momentum has weakened for a second consecutive week. While the labor market is not showing a sharp contraction, slower hiring may indicate that companies are becoming more cautious about expanding payrolls amid high borrowing costs and ongoing economic uncertainty.
The weekly ADP report differs from the standard monthly ADP employment report because it uses a four-week moving average to capture more recent changes in private-sector hiring. As a result, the latest decline provides another signal that labor demand is gradually losing momentum.
From a monetary policy perspective, the softer employment data could slightly reduce pressure on the Federal Reserve to tighten policy more aggressively. However, the impact may remain limited as inflation and elevated energy prices continue to be major concerns for the Fed heading into the end of the year.
For financial markets, weaker labor conditions could weigh on the US Dollar and Treasury yields if investors begin to scale back expectations for another interest-rate increase. Such a shift could provide support for gold, although market direction will remain highly dependent on the FOMC decision and guidance on the December policy outlook.(mrv)
