US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that President Donald Trump aims to resolve the conflict with Iran through diplomacy, preferring to avoid the use of military force. However, Rubio emphasized that Washington retains the capability to conduct military operations should the need arise.
These remarks come amid reports that both the US and Iran are preparing for potential further hostilities following the US midterm elections. Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, has also ordered the armed forces to respond to any threats with immediate and extensive action.
Trump himself has indicated that Washington has made significant progress and that the conflict could soon be brought to an end—whether through an agreement or other means. Meanwhile, several US media outlets have reported that the Trump administration is preparing military options for the period following the November 3 elections, though there has been no official confirmation that any new attacks have taken place.
Separately, tensions between Iran and the United Kingdom have also escalated. The Iranian Foreign Ministry has designated British military intelligence services as a "hostile group," accusing London of supporting US operations. Iran has previously pointed to the use of British military bases by US forces for operations related to the conflict.
Newsmaker Analysis: The situation remains fluid, unfolding along two parallel tracks: diplomatic efforts and military preparations. While Rubio’s statements suggest that the path to negotiation remains open, the military readiness on both sides means that the risk of escalation continues to be a concern for the markets, both leading up to and following the US elections.
