Activity in the UK services sector recorded its fastest growth in eight months during October 2026, reflecting an strengthening economy amid persistent inflationary pressures.
According to preliminary estimates from S&P Global, the services Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) rose to 53.1 from 52.1 in September, surpassing market expectations of 51.8. This gain was driven by an increase in new orders, investment spending on artificial intelligence (AI), and growing demand for technology services.
Employment also saw growth as business projects expanded, though some companies remain cautious regarding hiring. Meanwhile, price pressures remain elevated, while business optimism has improved, bolstered by plans for new product investments and business expansion.
Impact on GBP/USD: The better-than-expected PMI data could potentially support a strengthening of the Pound Sterling against the US Dollar, especially if the market raises its expectations for higher interest rates in the UK.
