U.K. manufacturing activity saw faster growth in October 2026, reflecting a recovery in the industrial sector despite mounting production cost pressures and global supply chain disruptions.
According to preliminary estimates from S&P Global, the manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) rose to 52.8 from 51.9 in September—surpassing market expectations of 51.7 and marking the strongest improvement in business conditions since May. This strengthening was driven by the fastest production growth in over two years and an increase in new orders, even as employment levels saw a slight decline.
Meanwhile, the conflict in the Middle East and a shortage of semiconductor components have led to longer supplier delivery times, while inventories of raw materials continue to shrink. Rising costs for energy, raw materials, and transportation have pushed production expenses sharply higher. Despite these challenges, business optimism is improving, bolstered by prospects for investment in artificial intelligence (AI) and projects within the defense sector, which are expected to support the growth of the U.K. industrial sector.
