The annual meetings of the IMF and the World Bank in Bangkok have drawn the attention of global markets, taking place amidst geopolitical tensions, high energy prices, rising government debt, and financial market uncertainty. The IMF identifies the conflict in the Middle East and potential disruptions to energy supplies as key risks to the global economy.
Beyond energy-related risks, the IMF has also highlighted high levels of government debt and rising bond yields, which could intensify pressure on national finances. This situation is a concern, as higher funding costs may narrow fiscal space while increasing risks to the stability of global financial markets.
For the Asian region, the IMF projects economic growth to slow from 5% in 2025 to 4.8% in 2026 and 4.4% in 2027. This pressure stems primarily from rising energy costs, tighter global monetary policies, and the potential for a market correction in artificial intelligence (AI) investments.
Meanwhile, the development of AI remains a pillar of economic growth for several nations. However, the IMF warns that optimism surrounding AI carries risks—specifically if investment expectations and corporate profit projections fail to align with reality. A correction in AI-related assets could potentially spill over into the broader financial market. (CP)
