Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama has affirmed that the government remains in close coordination with the Bank of Japan (BoJ) regarding the direction of economic policy and the management of inflation. In a statement on Wednesday (October 21, 2026), Katayama noted that there are no significant differences in perspective between the government and the central bank concerning the inflation outlook or Japan’s economic policy.
Katayama also highlighted the impact of tax cuts on the economy. According to her, tax reductions can boost public purchasing power and stimulate demand for goods and services. However, rising demand could also lead to price increases, particularly if production capacity fails to keep pace with consumer needs. The government is mindful of this, aiming to maintain a balance between economic growth and inflation stability.
The Japanese government is committed to pursuing an active yet responsible fiscal policy. Katayama emphasized the importance of utilizing the national budget to enhance domestic production and supply capacity, thereby strengthening economic growth without accelerating inflation. This approach is intended to preserve public purchasing power while supporting business activity amidst global economic uncertainty.
For financial markets, this alignment between the government and the BoJ may help reduce uncertainty regarding the trajectory of Japan’s economic policy. Nevertheless, the statement does not provide a clear timeline for potential interest rate adjustments. Investors will continue to monitor inflation trends, economic growth, and communications from the BoJ to gauge the outlook for the yen and the Japanese stock market. Should inflationary pressures remain strong, the likelihood of monetary policy tightening could increase, potentially providing support for the yen.
