Nikkei Surges 2%; Japanese Stocks Rebound
Japanese stock markets closed sharply higher in Monday's trading (Oct 8). The Nikkei 225 index rose 2.22%, driven by gains in the real estate, banking, and textile sectors. Advancing stocks significantly outnumbered decliners on the Tokyo exchange.
Recruit Holdings was a major mover, surging 22.79% to an all-time high of 16,165. Sumitomo Metal Mining rose 11.85%, while Olympus gained approximately 10.1%.
Conversely, some stocks remained under heavy pressure. CyberAgent plunged 16.68%, Mitsui Mining and Smelting fell 13.55%, and Secom weakened by about 7.3%.
Japanese market sentiment was also bolstered by a more positive global market environment. Investors began to ease concerns regarding Federal Reserve interest rate hikes following earlier US labor data that indicated a slowdown.
In other markets, Brent crude traded around US$83.85 per barrel and WTI at US$78.34. December gold futures stood around US$4,413.92, while the USD/JPY exchange rate rose to approximately 158.45.
Newsmaker Analysis: The Nikkei's rally indicates renewed interest in Japanese stocks, particularly as pressure from US interest rates has subsided. However, the weak yen and persistently high oil prices remain risks, as they could increase import costs for Japanese companies and limit further market rallies. (asd)
