Wall Street Falls as Fed Concerns Resurface

US stock markets closed slightly lower in Monday's trading (August 10). The S&P 500 fell 0.1%, the Nasdaq dipped 0.3%, and the Dow Jones lost approximately 61 points as investors once again focused on the Federal Reserve's interest rate trajectory.

The primary pressure stemmed from rising oil prices, which drove up US bond yields. Markets are concerned that high energy costs could reignite inflation ahead of this week's Consumer Price Index (CPI) data release.

This situation has brought the possibility of a Fed rate hike back into focus, even though the US labor market had previously shown signs of cooling. Investors believe that persistently high inflation could force the Fed to maintain a tighter monetary policy.

Financial sector stocks also faced pressure; Visa fell 0.3%, American Express dropped 0.6%, and Morgan Stanley lost 0.5%. Chipmaker stocks saw sharp declines as well, with Nvidia sliding 2.9% and Intel falling 4.1%.

Apple shares dropped about 1.5% after Jefferies downgraded the stock to "underperform." However, some major tech stocks managed to gain ground, including Microsoft, which rose 1.2% on the back of strong demand for cloud services.

Newsmaker Analysis: Wall Street is beginning to lose momentum as rising oil prices revive concerns regarding inflation and high interest rates. US CPI data will serve as the next key catalyst. Cooling inflation could help stocks rebound, whereas a higher-than-expected CPI reading could intensify pressure on the technology sector and interest-rate-sensitive stocks.
