BOJ Holds Rates; Yen Awaits Direction!

The Bank of Japan maintained its benchmark interest rate at 1.0% during its July 2026 meeting. This decision aligned with market expectations, keeping borrowing costs at their highest level since September 1995.

The decision was approved by an 8-to-1 vote. Board member Hajime Takata dissented, proposing a rate hike to 1.25% due to concerns that inflationary pressures still required vigilance.

The BOJ assesses that risks to Japan's economic growth are currently relatively balanced. However, the central bank will continue to monitor fluctuations in the yen's exchange rate and developments in global demand for the artificial intelligence sector, as both factors could impact the economy and inflation.

In its latest projections, the BOJ lowered its core inflation forecast for the 2026 fiscal year to 2.5% from the previous 2.8%. This downward revision reflects the waning impact of rising oil prices, while the economic growth forecast was slightly raised to 0.6%.

For the 2027 fiscal year, the BOJ raised its core inflation forecast to 2.4% but lowered its growth projection to 0.8%. These decisions indicate that the BOJ is in no rush to raise rates again, though the possibility of further tightening remains open should inflation and yen depreciation intensify. (asd)
