Wall Street moved higher on Wednesday (16/9) as investors awaited a crucial interest rate decision from the Federal Reserve. The decision has become the main focus of financial markets as it could potentially mark the beginning of a new rate-hiking cycle over the coming months.
The S&P 500 rose around 0.2%, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.5%, supported by strength in technology stocks. Meanwhile, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by around 101 points, or 0.2%, reflecting a still-cautious market tone ahead of the Fed’s policy announcement.
According to the CME FedWatch Tool, markets are pricing in a 92.9% probability that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates by 25 basis points at this meeting. The current US federal funds target range stands at 3.50%–3.75%.
However, investors are not only focused on Wednesday’s decision. Markets have also started to price in the possibility of further rate increases, with a 39.1% probability of another 25-basis-point hike at the Fed’s October meeting and around a 26.4% probability of an additional increase in December.
These expectations suggest that investors are increasingly considering the possibility that tighter monetary policy could remain in place for longer if inflationary pressures fail to ease sufficiently. As a result, the Fed’s statement and forward guidance following the rate decision will be crucial in determining whether the central bank is truly opening the door to a new tightening cycle.
Brent Wilsey, Chief Investment Officer at Wilsey Asset Management, said that keeping interest rates unchanged could actually create negative consequences for financial markets. With expectations for a rate hike already extremely high, any decision that differs from market pricing could trigger sharp volatility across equities, the US Dollar, Treasury bonds, and gold.(mrv)
