The euro faced renewed pressure against the US dollar during trading on Monday (October 19, 2026), as investor concerns regarding France’s financial situation and geopolitical tensions intensified. The EUR/USD pair fell by as much as 0.5% to the 1.1183 level during the Asian trading session, before recovering more than half of those losses. This weakness indicates that negative sentiment toward the euro has resurfaced, despite signs of a potential recovery late last week.
Market anxiety is evident in the rising demand for protection against a decline in the euro via the options market. The one-week risk reversal indicator widened to 46 basis points, signaling that the cost of hedging against a weakening euro has become significantly higher than the cost of hedging against a rise. By contrast, the indicator stood at just 5 basis points the previous Friday—the lowest level of negative sentiment seen in the past month. This sharp shift suggests that investors are once again bracing for downside risks to the EUR/USD pair.
Pressure on the euro has been compounded by widespread demonstrations in France, which have fueled concerns about the country’s fiscal health. Investors are worried about the French government’s ability to maintain budgetary stability amid growing political uncertainty. As one of the largest economies in the eurozone, any erosion of investor confidence in France could negatively impact sentiment toward the European common currency as a whole.
Beyond domestic European issues, escalating tensions involving the United States and Ukraine have further fueled market uncertainty. These geopolitical developments have prompted investors to exercise greater caution when holding risky assets, including the euro. Preliminary data from the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) also indicates that approximately three out of every four standard options transactions recorded so far are positioned in anticipation of a weaker euro. This suggests that market participants remain prepared for the possibility of further declines. Looking ahead, EUR/USD movements are expected to remain sensitive to political developments in France, geopolitical conflicts, and shifts in the strength of the US dollar. Should uncertainty continue to rise, the euro risks retesting the 1.1183 level, which marked its low during the Asian session. Conversely, if market concerns subside and the US dollar weakens, the euro may have the opportunity to extend its recovery. For investors, the growing demand for protection against a weakening euro serves as a signal that the pressure on the European currency has not yet fully abated.
