The EUR/USD pair attempted a recovery during Thursday’s trading session (October 15), following a period of sharp pressure driven by a strengthening US dollar. The euro’s rebound was supported by a decline in the US Dollar Index, which fell by approximately 0.1% to 102.06—retreating from an 18-month high. A drop in US government bond yields also provided the European single currency with room to pare its earlier losses.
The shift in the dollar’s trajectory followed cautious remarks from several Federal Reserve (Fed) officials regarding the likelihood of near-term interest rate hikes. Although US consumer inflation rose to 3.7% year-on-year in September—surpassing the 3.6% forecast—market participants have begun to anticipate that the US central bank will not rush to tighten monetary policy. This has eased pressure on the euro, which had previously weakened amid growing expectations for US rate hikes.
Nevertheless, the upside potential for the EUR/USD pair remains constrained by various economic challenges within the Eurozone. Concerns regarding France’s fiscal situation and high energy prices—exacerbated by the conflict in the Middle East—continue to weigh on the region’s economic growth outlook. Furthermore, the Eurozone’s reliance on energy imports increases the risk of inflationary pressure, leading investors to remain cautious in their assessment of the European Central Bank’s (ECB) policy outlook.
Market attention is now focused on the upcoming release of US Producer Price Index (PPI) data and retail sales figures, scheduled for Thursday evening. Both indicators have the potential to influence expectations regarding Fed interest rate policy and will likely dictate the next move for the EUR/USD pair. Should the US economic data come in weaker than expected, the euro could extend its recovery; conversely, stronger-than-expected results could reignite demand for the US dollar and exert renewed pressure on the currency pair.
