The US goods trade deficit widened in September 2026 to its largest level since March 2025, driven by a sharp increase in capital goods imports linked to technology investment and the expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure.
The goods trade deficit increased 2.1% from the previous month to US$134.9 billion. The figure was larger than economists’ expectations for a US$130.2 billion shortfall, indicating that pressure on the US trade balance remains elevated.
The value of goods imports rose 2.4%, while exports increased by a stronger 2.6%. However, a surge in capital goods imports continued to widen the deficit, particularly in categories including computers and accessories, semiconductors, and telecommunications equipment.
Capital goods imports jumped 7.5% in September, reflecting strong demand from US companies for overseas equipment and components used in data center construction and AI investment. The trend has become one of the main drivers behind the deterioration in the trade balance over the past year.
The widening deficit shows that the AI investment boom continues to fuel strong US import demand. While this reflects robust business investment, higher imports could weigh on overall economic growth calculations if they continue to outpace exports.(mrv)
