Kevin Hassett, Director of the U.S. National Economic Council, stated that inflation once again requires attention, as September consumer price data indicates that price pressures persist. While inflation appeared to be under control in previous months, the latest data suggests that price pressures may be intensifying again.
The September Consumer Price Index (CPI) data shows that the U.S. CPI rose by 0.6% on a monthly basis, while core inflation increased by 0.3%. Both figures point to stronger-than-expected price pressures, even though the costs of certain items—such as beef and eggs—actually declined.
Hassett noted that it is too early to determine whether this rise in inflation represents a shift in the underlying trend or merely a temporary spike. He emphasized that data from the coming months will be crucial in assessing whether price pressures are truly strengthening or if the trend is transient.
These remarks follow a recent appearance by Federal Reserve official Kevin Warsh, who—much like in previous instances—offered no guidance regarding the future direction of interest rates. During an IMF meeting, Warsh reaffirmed the Federal Reserve’s commitment to maintaining price stability but declined to provide any insight into potential policy decisions for the upcoming meeting.
Hassett also pointed to the strength of the U.S. economy as a factor the Federal Reserve must monitor. Growing consumer confidence in the economic outlook has fueled an increase in spending, which could, in turn, exert further upward pressure on prices.
Newsmaker Analysis: Hassett’s comments reinforce market concerns regarding a potential resurgence of inflation risks in the U.S. Should price pressures persist alongside robust consumer spending, the Federal Reserve may find more justification to maintain a restrictive interest rate policy. Such a scenario could bolster the U.S. dollar and Treasury yields, while simultaneously posing a challenge for gold and risk-sensitive assets.
