Hang Seng Drops 1.1% as Tech Stocks Weigh Down the Index
The Hang Seng Index fell 1.1% to 25,652.82 in Hong Kong trading, reversing the approximately 1% gain recorded in the previous session. Selling pressure was widespread across nearly all market sectors.
Tencent Holdings was the biggest drag on the index, with its shares dropping about 2.2%. Meanwhile, Laopu Gold recorded the sharpest decline, correcting by approximately 8.5%.
Of the 93 stocks comprising the index, 79 declined while only 13 advanced. All sectors traded in negative territory, with the trading and industrial sectors among those facing the heaviest pressure.
In the short term, the Hang Seng has fallen about 0.8% over the past five days. However, looking at the one-month performance, the index has still posted a gain of around 6.1%, indicating that the recovery trend has not yet fully dissipated.
The Hang Seng currently sits about 8.6% below its 52-week high but approximately 13.9% above its June low. The total market capitalization of the index constituents stands at around HK$30.8 trillion, with a dividend yield of approximately 2.9%.
Newsmaker Analysis: This decline in the Hang Seng signals the onset of profit-taking following a strong rally over the past month. The pressure extending across almost all sectors suggests investors are adopting a more defensive stance. As long as the index holds above the 25,500 level, the recovery trend remains intact; however, a drop below this mark could pave the way for a deeper correction. (asd)
