Meta and Alphabet Propel Wall Street Surge
US stock markets kicked off August with a sharp rally. The Dow Jones index closed at a new record high after easing US-Iran tensions drove down oil prices and government bond yields.
Oil prices fell by approximately 5% after President Donald Trump stated that talks with Iran regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz would take place. Although Tehran denied the existence of direct negotiations, the market welcomed the prospect of de-escalating conflict.
The S&P 500 surged 1.48% to 7,600.61, the Nasdaq Composite rose 2.12% to 25,912.86, and the Dow Jones gained 1.34%—or roughly 704 points—to reach 53,189.55.
The communication services sector was the primary driver, rising over 4% fueled by gains in Meta and Alphabet shares. Conversely, the energy sector fell more than 1% as lower oil prices weighed on oil and gas company stocks.
Market sentiment was also bolstered by a strong earnings season. Of the 304 S&P 500 companies that have reported results, approximately 85.2% exceeded analyst expectations. Amazon shares also rallied after the company's market value surpassed US$3 trillion for the first time.
Newsmaker Analysis: Declining oil prices and bond yields helped boost appetite for technology stocks and risk assets. However, the rally remains contingent on developments in US-Iran negotiations, earnings reports from AI companies, and Federal Reserve interest rate expectations. A failure in diplomacy could push oil prices back up and put pressure on Wall Street. (arl)
