Wall Street Mixed Ahead of SpaceX IPO
The United States stock market moved mixed on Friday (June 12th) after a sharp rebound in the previous session. Market movements appeared restrained as optimism regarding the potential for a peace deal between the US and Iran confronted volatility in technology stocks ahead of SpaceX's planned IPO.
The S&P 500 index moved flat, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.5%, supported by defensive stocks. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq 100, heavily dominated by technology stocks, fell 0.5%, indicating investors were becoming more cautious about the technology sector after a strong recent rally.
Positive sentiment came from US President Donald Trump's statement that the United States was close to a deal to gradually restore energy trade through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran also confirmed that the deal was nearing completion. This news sent energy prices and bond yields lower, providing some relief for credit conditions after previous data showed accelerating consumer and producer inflation.
The financial sector was one of the market's drivers, with shares of JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs rallying. Falling bond yields and easing concerns about surging energy prices have helped improve sentiment toward banking stocks, especially as the market begins to assess the risk of energy inflation could ease if the Hormuz Passage is reopened.
However, pressure remains on technology stocks and AI infrastructure companies ahead of the SpaceX IPO. The planned IPO is said to be targeting approximately US$75 billion in funding for new spending on data centers and computing capacity. Reports that SpaceX's IPO was more than fourfold oversubscribed have increased investor attention to the technology and digital infrastructure sectors.
In my opinion, Wall Street's current movements indicate the market is at a crossroads. On the one hand, the prospect of US-Iran peace and falling energy prices are supporting riskier assets. However, on the other hand, high technology stock valuations and the euphoria leading up to the SpaceX IPO are making investors more selective. As long as uncertainty about interest rates, inflation, and the direction of the technology sector remains high, Wall Street is likely to remain mixed in the short term.
