Dow Jumps 600 Points After Trump Claims "Productive Talks" with Iran
U.S. stocks rallied on Monday after President Donald Trump said the United States and Iran have held talks and that he was halting strikes on Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure. The announcement raised hopes that the Middle East conflict— which had pushed oil prices sharply higher and fueled recession fears—could be moving closer to an end.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 631 points, or 1.38%, to close at 46,208.47. The S&P 500 gained 1.15% to end at 6,581.00, while the Nasdaq Composite rose 1.38% and settled at 21,946.76.
Before Trump’s comments—posted on Truth Social early Monday—futures had been pointing to further losses for equity markets under pressure from soaring oil prices and uncertainty over how long the Iran conflict would last. After the post, however, Dow futures briefly jumped more than 1,000 points, signaling a rapid shift in sentiment.
At their highs of the day, all three major U.S. indexes were up more than 2%. The Dow at one point climbed more than 1,100 points, or about 2.5%. The Nasdaq also gained roughly 2.5%, while the S&P 500 advanced about 2.2%, underscoring the breadth of the relief rally.
