Massive Short Squeeze: Bitcoin Surges to June Highs
Bitcoin surged sharply during Thursday's trading (August 20), leading a major rally across the cryptocurrency market. Its price climbed approximately 11% to $71,505—having briefly touched $71,700, its highest level since early June. This upward momentum followed renewed calls from U.S. President Donald Trump for Congress to pass cryptocurrency regulations, alongside a drop in Treasury yields that boosted investor appetite for risk assets.
Market sentiment was further bolstered by the U.S. Treasury Department's decision to double the size of its long-term debt buyback operations. This move drove down Treasury yields and improved global liquidity conditions. Bitcoin's rally subsequently triggered a wave of short squeezes; over $1 billion in Bitcoin short positions were liquidated within roughly an hour, while total liquidations of bearish positions across the crypto market reached approximately $2.7 billion.
Additional impetus came from the White House. Trump urged Congress to swiftly pass the CLARITY Act, a proposed bill aimed at establishing a clearer regulatory framework for the U.S. digital asset industry. The meeting was attended by key crypto industry executives—including leaders from Coinbase and Robinhood—as well as officials from the CFTC and SEC.
However, the CLARITY Act still faces debate in Congress, particularly regarding the classification of crypto assets and yield payments on stablecoins. The banking sector has expressed concern that stablecoin yields could compete directly with interest-bearing savings accounts. The market is also awaiting further meetings between the CFTC and industry players to gain a clearer picture of the direction of U.S. crypto regulation.
The rally extended beyond Bitcoin. Ether surged approximately 18.3% to $2,274.60, briefly hitting a 15-month high. XRP rose about 14.2%, Solana 13.4%, Cardano 8.5%, and Dogecoin nearly 10%. Crypto-related stocks also rallied, including Coinbase, Strategy, Circle, Robinhood, MARA Holdings, and Riot Platforms.
Newsmaker Analysis: Bitcoin's current surge is driven by a combination of global "risk-on" sentiment, falling Treasury yields, a short squeeze, and optimism regarding US crypto regulation. Breaking through the US$70,000 level reinforces short-term bullish momentum, though a double-digit gain in a single session also raises the risk of profit-taking. The US-Iran conflict and rising oil prices remain risk factors, as they could once again drive up inflation and yields. As long as regulatory sentiment remains positive and US yields do not spike again, Bitcoin has the potential to sustain its momentum above US$70,000. (arl)
