Bitcoin Awaits Major Catalyst from the White House
Bitcoin edged up during Monday's trading (August 17) but remained range-bound as investors exercised caution regarding geopolitical tensions and regulatory uncertainty surrounding cryptocurrency in the United States. Bitcoin rose approximately 0.7% to US$63,418.5, following a decline of nearly 3% over the previous week.
Sentiment toward risk assets remains dampened by the US-Iran conflict and uncertainty in the Strait of Hormuz. These tensions have kept oil prices elevated and prompted investors to reduce their exposure to speculative assets like cryptocurrency. Bitcoin is also still trading well below its record high set in October.
Additional pressure stems from fund outflows in spot Bitcoin ETFs. Throughout last week, these ETF products recorded net outflows of nearly US$390 million—the largest outflow since early July. This trend coincided with a correction in Bitcoin's price and suggests that institutional demand has yet to regain significant strength.
The market is also awaiting a meeting between President Donald Trump and various crypto industry leaders at the White House on Wednesday. The meeting will involve executives from crypto firms, prediction markets, traditional finance, and the artificial intelligence sector. A day later, the CFTC is scheduled to discuss crypto regulation, even as deliberations on the Clarity Act remain unresolved.
Altcoin movements have been mixed. Ether rose about 0.8% to US$1,895 after declining last week. XRP, BNB, Solana, and Cardano traded slightly lower, while Dogecoin and the TRUMP token posted modest gains. The broader crypto market continues to lag behind the rally in technology and AI stocks seen last week.
Newsmaker Analysis: Bitcoin is currently caught in a tug-of-war between the prospect of clearer US regulations and pressures arising from geopolitics and ETF outflows. The White House meeting and the CFTC's agenda this week could serve as crucial catalysts. As long as institutional capital inflows have not returned and tensions in the Strait of Hormuz remain high, Bitcoin's price movement is likely to remain constrained, with the potential for increased volatility in response to new regulatory or geopolitical developments.
