Warsh Keeps Cards Close to the Chest; Fed Decision Increasingly Hard to Predict
Uncertainty is mounting ahead of the Federal Reserve's interest rate decision, as Fed Chair Kevin Warsh keeps his policy stance tightly under wraps. While the prevailing expectation is that the Fed will hold rates in the 3.50%–3.75% range, Warsh’s approach of scaling back forward guidance means the possibility of a surprise rate hike cannot be ruled out.
Markets are pricing in roughly a one-in-three chance that the Fed will raise rates by 25 basis points. A number of officials have begun to express heightened concern regarding inflation, while Fed officials from Dallas and Cleveland have signaled support for policy tightening. This dynamic raises the prospect of a split vote should the FOMC majority decide to keep rates unchanged.
The Fed’s dilemma is further complicated by the fact that inflationary pressures have not fully subsided, yet the labor market is showing weak job creation despite a low unemployment rate. Fluctuations in oil prices driven by Middle East conflict also complicate the assessment; while energy pressures could reignite inflation, their impact could dissipate rapidly if geopolitical tensions ease.
The FOMC statement is scheduled for release on Thursday (July 30, 2026) at 01:00 WIB, followed by a press conference with Warsh at 01:30 WIB. As the July meeting does not include economic projections or a "dot plot," market participants will closely scrutinize the rate decision, the voting outcome, and Warsh’s commentary on inflation and the likelihood of further tightening. Warsh’s tone during the press conference could prove to be the primary driver of market direction.(CP)
