Trump: Iran “Gifted” 10 Tankers Through the Strait of Hormuz
US President Donald Trump said on Thursday (March 26) that Iran allowed 10 oil tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz this week as a “gift” to the United States, which he described as a signal that Tehran wanted to show good faith in the process of resolving the conflict.
Speaking at a Cabinet meeting, Trump said Iran would initially allow eight vessels to pass, then added two more, bringing the total to 10. He made the claim while reiterating that the US was in “substantial” talks regarding Iran, despite Tehran’s previous denial of any direct negotiations with Washington.
US special envoy Steve Witkoff said the US administration had received several approaches from regional countries and others who wanted to play a role in ending the conflict peacefully. Witkoff also confirmed that the US had presented a 15-point framework for a peace deal, which he said was channeled through Pakistan as a mediator, while emphasizing Trump’s directive to keep details confidential and not negotiate through the media.
Meanwhile, Iranian state media reportedly stated that Tehran rejected the US ceasefire offer and put forward its own list of conditions, including demands regarding sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz. Trump acknowledged that Iran's ability to continue disrupting the waterway remains a challenge, as the risk of attacks on ships remains a factor that could destabilize energy flows and market sentiment.
