US Private Hiring Slows Further, ADP Weekly Gain Falls to 8,250

U.S. private-sector job growth continued to lose momentum, according to the latest ADP NER Pulse data. Private employers added an average of just 8,250 jobs per week during the four-week period ending July 25, 2026, extending a multi-week slowdown in hiring activity.

The weakening trend has been clear. Average weekly job gains fell from 30,750 in early June to 24,250, then 21,000 and 19,750 later in the month. The pace slowed further in July, dropping to 16,250, 14,500, 11,000, and finally 8,250 jobs per week by July 25.

The NER Pulse is a high-frequency labor market indicator from ADP that uses a four-week moving average to track changes in private employment. The data is seasonally adjusted and designed to provide a more timely picture of hiring conditions, although the preliminary figures can still be revised.

The slowdown is consistent with ADP’s monthly employment report, which showed U.S. private payrolls increased by only 44,000 jobs in July, sharply below the revised 95,000 gain in June. Goods-producing industries lost jobs, while most of the increase came from the services sector, particularly education and healthcare.

However, wage pressures have not disappeared completely. Pay growth for workers who stayed in their jobs remained around 4.4% year-on-year, while job-changers saw wage growth of about 7%. This suggests that hiring demand is cooling, but wage inflation may still remain a concern for the Federal Reserve.(mrv)
