The Japanese stock market closed lower on Monday (October 19, 2026), with the Nikkei 225 index falling 0.46%. This decline was driven by selling pressure in the paper and pulp, transportation, and communications sectors. The situation reflects continued investor caution in the face of global market uncertainty, even as some Japanese stocks managed to post significant gains during the trading session.
Despite the overall decline in the index, several stocks bucked the trend. Toho Co., Ltd. was among the top performers, surging 7.04% to 1,633.50 yen. Shift Inc. also saw gains, rising 5.48% to 1,116 yen, followed by BayCurrent Inc., which climbed 5.35% to 10,740 yen. The latter’s rise pushed BayCurrent shares to a five-year high, signaling that investor buying interest remains present for select companies.
Conversely, Taiyo Yuden faced the heaviest selling pressure, plunging 4.85% to 9,582 yen. Trend Micro shares also weakened, falling 4.21% to 7,037 yen, while Mercari dropped 3.95% to 3,670 yen. Overall, 2,064 stocks declined on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, compared to 1,413 that advanced and 254 that remained unchanged. These figures indicate that selling pressure continues to dominate the Japanese stock market.
