Silver prices (XAG/USD) edged slightly higher during Tuesday's trading (Oct 13), rising approximately 0.35% to US$60.53 per troy ounce from US$60.31 in the previous session. Despite posting a daily gain, silver's movement remains relatively constrained as the market continues to monitor the trajectory of the US Dollar, interest rates, and global economic conditions.
This modest rise is insufficient to erase the pressure silver has faced throughout the year. Since the beginning of 2026, silver prices have fallen by approximately 14.85%. This situation indicates that while silver occasionally receives a boost from safe-haven demand and expectations of shifting monetary policy, macroeconomic headwinds remain the primary obstacle.
A key factor to watch is the direction of Federal Reserve policy. High interest rates tend to exert pressure on precious metals because investors have access to alternative assets that offer yields. Conversely, if expectations for tightening ease and bond yields fall, silver could find room to regain investor interest.
Beyond its status as a precious metal, silver also functions as an industrial commodity; thus, its outlook is influenced by global economic activity. Demand from the technology, renewable energy, and manufacturing sectors serves as a long-term fundamental driver. However, should global economic growth slow, industrial demand could become an additional source of downward pressure on prices.
Newsmaker views the current rise in silver prices as a short-term recovery rather than a confirmed trend reversal. As long as pressure from the US Dollar and interest rates persists, silver's upside potential remains limited. The market needs to see whether subsequent gains can generate stronger momentum or if the metal will instead face renewed selling pressure.
