Nikkei Rises 0.8% as Tech and Banking Stocks Lead Gains
Japan’s Nikkei 225 closed 0.83% higher at 67,524 on Wednesday following a public holiday, while the broader Topix Index gained 0.94% to 4,139. The advance extended this week’s gains, supported mainly by technology and financial stocks.
Sentiment toward the technology sector improved after CoreWeave and Super Micro Computer issued upbeat business outlooks. Both companies continue to benefit from strong global spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure, boosting optimism across Japanese tech shares.
Several technology stocks posted strong gains. Kioxia Holdings and Fujikura each rose 3.9%, Taiyo Yuden surged 7.5%, Murata Manufacturing gained 3.2%, and Ibiden advanced 3%.
Banking shares also provided solid support to the market. Mitsubishi UFJ gained 2.7%, Sumitomo Mitsui climbed 3.4%, and Mizuho Financial rose 3.1%, reflecting continued investor interest in the financial sector.
On the geopolitical front, investors continued to monitor the prospects of a U.S.-Iran agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Optimism improved after Pakistan’s defense minister said Washington and Tehran were “close to some sort of arrangement.”(mrv)
