Japanese Markets Under Pressure; Tech Stocks Weigh Heavily

Japanese stock markets weakened again during Wednesday's trading, extending the downward pressure seen in the previous session. The Nikkei 225 index fell 0.8% to below the 62,000 level as the sell-off in technology stocks persisted.

The primary pressure stemmed from investor concerns regarding the sustainability of the rally in artificial intelligence (AI)-related stocks. Japanese markets also tracked Wall Street's decline, following a slump in US chip stocks during the prior session.

Several major Japanese technology stocks recorded sharp declines. Kioxia Holdings fell 2.4%, Tokyo Electron dropped 5.5%, SoftBank Group retreated 4.7%, Murata Manufacturing plunged 9%, and Taiyo Yuden fell 5.8%.

The financial sector also faced pressure. Mitsubishi UFJ declined 1.9%, Sumitomo Mitsui fell 2.0%, and Mizuho Financial retreated 3.0%. This weakness indicates that selling pressure is not confined to the technology sector but is spreading to financial stocks.

In terms of market impact, the Nikkei's decline suggests investors remain cautious regarding technology stocks and AI sector valuations. Geopolitical tensions have also returned to the spotlight after the US military reported successfully intercepting a surprise attack by Iran on US forces in the Middle East, a development that pushed oil prices higher. If global chip stocks continue to weaken and oil prices remain elevated, Japanese markets could experience continued volatility in the short term. (asd)
