Nikkei 225 Plunges 3.83%, Japanese Stocks Hit Monthly Low
The Japanese stock market closed sharply lower on Tuesday (July 28th). The Nikkei 225 index plunged 3.83% to its lowest level in a month, led by declines in the paper and pulp, transportation, and communications sectors.
Selling pressure was widespread on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. The number of declining stocks reached 2,470, far outnumbering the 1,032 advancing stocks, while 256 stocks closed unchanged. This indicates that investor sentiment towards the Japanese market remains negative.
Kioxia Holdings was the stock with the deepest decline, plunging 18.33%, followed by SUMCO, which fell 16.53%, and Lasertec, which fell 14.05%. Conversely, Shift rose 7.69%, Fujitsu rose 6.26%, and Nitori Holdings added 4.15%.
The Japanese market's decline occurred amid falling oil and gold prices. Crude oil fell to US$80.91 per barrel, Brent weakened to US$84.01 per barrel, while gold futures fell to US$4,048.20 per troy ounce. Meanwhile, the USD/JPY pair remained relatively stable at around 163.71. (asd)
