European Stocks Rise on Ceasefire Extension
European stocks closed slightly higher on Wednesday (April 22nd), boosted by improved sentiment after President Donald Trump stated he would extend the ceasefire with Iran indefinitely to allow space for peace talks. The STOXX 50 index rose 0.5% and the STOXX 600 gained 0.3%.
The market responded positively to Trump's statement, which also confirmed there were no plans for new attacks in the near future. However, he stated that the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz remains in place, meaning geopolitical tensions have not fully subsided, and investors are still weighing its impact on regional stability and energy flows.
Meanwhile, a separate report stated that Iran has received "some indications" that the US may be willing to ease the blockade, although uncertainty remains high regarding the timing of formal negotiations. This situation has limited market gains, as market participants await further signals from both sides.
Additional supporting factors come from the earnings season. ABB shares surged more than 5% after the company posted above-expected results and raised guidance, helping lift sentiment amid investor focus on earnings prospects and the direction of global demand. (asd)
