Iranian Diplomacy Puts Pressure on the Dollar and US Yields

US government bond yields and the US dollar weakened during European trading on August 3. Markets responded to President Donald Trump's decision to reopen diplomatic channels with Iran, causing concerns regarding conflict escalation to subside.

Optimism surrounding the negotiations drove oil prices down sharply. The drop in energy costs helped alleviate inflation concerns, leading investors to lower their expectations that the Federal Reserve would need to maintain a tight interest rate policy for an extended period.

The yield on the 10-year US Treasury note fell by approximately 5.7 basis points to 4.687%. The decline in bond yields reflects increased demand for government debt alongside reduced inflationary pressure from energy prices.

The DXY dollar index also weakened by 0.1% to around 99.823. Demand for the dollar as a safe-haven asset waned, while joint intervention by the US and Japan to strengthen the yen further limited the dollar's recovery against the Japanese currency.

Newsmaker Analysis: The weakening of the dollar and US yields serves as a positive factor for gold. As US-Iran diplomacy exerts downward pressure on oil prices and interest rate hike expectations, gold is likely to remain resilient. However, a breakdown in negotiations could once again drive up oil prices, inflation, and market volatility.
