Persian Gulf Attacks and Trump's Threats Boost Oil Prices

Oil prices rose sharply on Tuesday (March 31st), following Iran's attack on a Kuwaiti-owned tanker in the Persian Gulf. This attack caused fires and a possible oil spill in the waters around Dubai. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) prices surged 3.7% to $106.70 per barrel, reaching their highest level since July 2022. Meanwhile, Brent prices also rose, with May futures trading 0.2% higher at $112.78 per barrel.

The rise in oil prices was fueled by escalating tensions in the Middle East, with Iran continuing to attack ships passing through the Persian Gulf. The conflict, which has entered its fifth week, coupled with US President Donald Trump's threat to destroy Iran's energy infrastructure if the Strait of Hormuz is not reopened, has increased uncertainty in global energy markets.

Meanwhile, tensions escalated further when the Iran-backed Houthi group in Yemen attacked Israel with missiles. Iran is also encouraging the group to prepare new attacks on shipping lanes in the Red Sea, which could threaten oil supplies from alternative routes besides Hormuz. These attacks have the potential to disrupt global oil supplies and increase tensions in energy markets.

In response to these tensions, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the US would "regain control" of the Strait of Hormuz with an escort of US vessels or a multinational coalition to ensure smooth shipping. The market is now on edge, with oil prices continuing their upward trend amid uncertainty caused by escalating tensions in the region.
