Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan Targeted in Iran's Retaliation
Tensions in the Middle East escalated sharply after the United States launched a retaliatory strike against Iran following the downing of a US Apache helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz on Monday (June 8, 2026).
At 7:33 PM Eastern Time (US time), the AH-64 Apache helicopter crashed, and both pilots were rescued, according to Centcom.
In retaliation, Iran targeted several strategic locations in Bahrain, Kuwait, and Jordan using missiles and drones. Bahrain's air defenses successfully intercepted the attack, while Iranian media reports said explosions were heard in several locations around the Strait of Hormuz. The attack raised concerns that the interim agreement between the US and Iran could be delayed.
US President Donald Trump asserted that the strike was a proportionate response to Iran's actions and emphasized the importance of maintaining a military presence in the region. Trump publicly stated that a deal with Tehran was still possible within days, although the latest clashes have raised uncertainty.
Iran, through its official media, confirmed it would respond to the US attack and warned regional countries not to allow access to American troops. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, even emphasized that Iran is ready to take more decisive action if the agreement is violated, while still expressing a preference for diplomacy.
This incident underscores the fragility of the two-month-old ceasefire. Negotiations mediated by third parties, including Pakistan, continue despite active military engagement on the ground. These tensions remain a significant obstacle to regional stability and the smooth flow of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
Despite the ongoing conflict, global markets are closely monitoring developments. Surging oil prices, concerns about inflation and geopolitical risks are further weighing on investors. Prospects for near-term peace remain slim, while the US and Iran have both emphasized their intention to keep diplomatic channels open, despite the looming military threat.
